A transcript of the 1891 Census

This list was taken from the extensive work of the Foxearth & District History Society.

tempusfugit encourages you to visit the fine F&DHS website, this list is to complement thier work and provide the visitor to this site a way of finding names without have to leave this website or to make another search.

This census is important with respect to identifying residents and locations within the village at the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries. Some of the house names and locations are no longer listed in the current village of Belchamp Walter. Names of residents in 1891 quite possibly are the parents of "lost souls" of those involved in the 1st World War.

The transcription from the information on the F&DHS website includes formatting and correction of the key. The spellings have been preserved and I will attempt to add alternative spellings where known.

This is a very long list and I am adding cross references to other pages on this website. The text in green is pretty much direct quotes from the Census as presented by the Foxearth History Society.

As I have done on my page for St. Mary's Church and the listed buildings in the village of Belchamp Walter I have added a cross-reference on this page to current locations in the village and to other pages on this website.

The way that the census is structured would suggest that the dwellings and road names are grouped in some way. Never-the-less, there is some doubt to the location of Cottage Row and Poplar Road.

Top

According to Thomas Wright, who was probably taking his numbers from the Nation Census, the population in 1821 was 806 and 870 in 1831. The census was taken ever 10 years since 1801. The F&DHS website does not give a total and just lists the names.

Munt Cottages

There are six Munt cottages listed in the 1891 census. In 2023 there is only the one. Numbers 1 and 2 may be what is now known as Hall Cottage.

The postal address of Munt Cottage is actually Church Road. Well, that is what the council tax bill says. It is also recognised as being on Hall Road.

Cottage Row

The location of Cottage Row is in dispute it could be the houses on Gestingthope Road, the last of the cottages is now the location of the water treatment plant, or possibly the houses on what is now Bells Road West of the Duck pond.

The map above, Chapman and Andre 1777, shows two dwellings between the crossroads and Larges farm.

There does not seem to be an entry for numbers 1 and 5, perhaps they were not occupied?

The listing in the census, counting down from 10, maybe an indication that Cottage Row was on Bells Road and the numbers were from West to East, with number 1 closest to the crossroads.

The Eight Bells Pub

Strangely not a listed building - However, although it features in the 1891, and other censuses, it is not an "old" building.

Puttock End and Otten Road

The OS Map from the 1890's shows more dwellings than are presently located there. The dwelling named just "Otten Road" is probably the farm/nursery, numbers 1, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 are list residents

Gestingthorpe Road in 2023 runs South from the crossroads. Starting at the village duck pond and next to the Old Forge is now the location of much newer houses that existed in 1891. Gestingthorpe Road continues towards the village of Gestingthorpe and meets with the Southern foot of Chapel Hill, passing through Green Common past Larges Farm.

Forty Acres

This is an address that is listed in the 1891 survey. Searching for this address and Belchamp Walter is not really helpful especially if the search is "40 Acres".

The dwelling is also shown on early OS maps as Long Farm.
