Mary Hall
These description was taken from Thomas Wright's History and Topography of Essex.
The text in green "quote" boxes is from The History and Topgraphy of Essex", hence the spelling of
Easton Hall
"
The estates belonging to Samuel Ruggles, Esq. in Belchamp Walter, were devised
to his son John, who left these possessions to
Joseph Saville, Esq whose son, of the same name, left them to his children, who are minors.
The manor-house of Mary Hall, sometimes called Merry Hall, is supposed to have Mary been so named from
the patron saint of the church,
from which it is not far distant.
This manor, in 1270 to 1276, belonged to John Manduit, and afterwards to Thomas Botetourt,
who sold it to Thomas de Ufford, earl of Suffolk, whose son William, earl of Suffolk, conveyed it to Adam de Hautboys,
and others.
It afterwards be longed to Thomas Danmartin, and, in 1442, to William Pannel.
"
"
John Smith was possessed of it in 1466, and Roger Martin and John Worral, from whom it passed to the Raymond family,
and to Samuel Ruggles.
"
The ownership of Mary Hall in 1741/1742 was probably a Ruggles descendant.

From Lost Parish Churches of Essex:
Northwood
(OS Ref: TL 8012 3920?)
Information on the parish of Northwood is almost non-existent. From my researches in the Essex Record Office, I have been unable to
uncover any information as to its history, appearance, demise or location. The only evidence I have for its existence is its place
on the Essex Parish Map. Here it lies between the parishes of Little Yeldham, Castle Hedingham, Gestingthorpe, Belchamp Walter and
Belchamp Otten.
While browsing over my OS maps one day, looking for a possible site for this church, I noticed St Mary Hall sitting right in
the middle of these very parishes. As this is sited nowhere near another church and was probably named for its association with
a building called St Mary's I suspect this area is a likely candidate for the location. The church was perhaps behind the hall
- possibly near the pond. On the Chapman and André map of 1777, there is shown a clump of trees called Northey Wood from which
the parish got its name!
Location: St Mary Hall is beside a narrow road halfway between Little Yeldham and Belchamp Otten. The owners advised me that
there is nothing to see in relation to the church on their land.

Background to this page
Having seen some of my history pages being found by those making an Internet search I have decided to add
a bit more context on how the pages came about.
An Impression in March 2022 was looking for information on Eyston Hall (I presume).
The Impression was for my page on
Belchamp Walter's Farmer's Strike of 1893
The name Easton Hall was taken from Thomas Wright's account and on reflection I note that the current maps (OS and
Google) refer to Eyston Hall. There is also an Eyston Hall Farm (seperate from the Hall I think),
an Eyston Lodge and
Eyston Smyth's Farm, the last two are on Temple End (the road to Foxearth and Pentlow).
