The Complete Peerage - George Edward Cockayne
The research into the historical account of the reason why there is a chanty chapel/tomb memorising a Sir John de Botetourt in the church at Belchamp Walter, references to the Complete Peerage have come to light.
At first I was following the information that I found in the church that described the chantry but I am now not so sure that this initial account was entirely accurate. Early research into the Botetourt name revealed accounts that he could have been the illegitimate son of Edward I, but this is supposedly been disproved. However, I think that I can be certain that the chantry is to a Botetourt and I think I have worked out the reason that it is in the church at Belchamp Walter.
Suffice it to say that the explaination is less than simple. The Complete Peerage has been quoted by those that claim that the parentage of Sir John is recorded incorrectly and there have been suggestions that there should be "corrections" made to The Complete Peerage. These corrections revolve around the work by Douglas Richardson (Plantagenet Ancestry) on F.N. Craig and Hailes Abbey Chronicals.
