Oliver Raymond
The Samuels - The Johns - John Raymond I - Oliver Raymond (Parliamentarian) who died in 1679 - John Mayne - The Countess Isabella
My page on How Belchamp Walter's history was shaped by the English Civil War - The Jacobean influence
Removal of the name of Raymond (and possibly Oliver) from the website.
I may have been getting paranoid here.
Oliver is the 1st son of the current owner. He does not appear on the Freer Tree (this is for a number of reasons the greatest is a policy decision of the part of geneologists in general). Neither to the other 2 sons, although I think tha same principle would apply here as well.
My research started when I searched for Charles. Both Charles and his father Micheal appear on the tree and information can be freely found on Charles and the buisinesses at Belchamp Hall from places such a Companies House. Charles' spouse is not on the tree but she can be found if you know where to look.
Oliver Raymond d. 1679
Oliver Raymond M.P. succeeded to the Belchamp Estate in 1635 on the death of his father John Raymond I
Using the account from Thomas Wright, the names on the family memorial in the church and a couple of family trees I have tried to put together a "who was who and when". The reuse of names does not help here.
There are many Johns, Olivers and Franceses.
Oliver Raymond married Francis Harris in 1653 thus marrying into the Plantagenet Line.
There is an irony here as Oliver served in Oliver Cromwell's Protectorate
Parliaments before his marriage into the Royal line.
The English Civil War saw the destruction of the Chantry to Sir John Botetourt and the resignation of the vicar of St. Mary's - William Smythies in 1643.
Whether this was due to the political climate at the time or for another reason, it is not documented.
John Wright was the vicar of St. Mary's in 1650 (his patron being Charles I by lapse as Charles was executed in 1649)

From Thomas Wright:
Again, rather rambling and not easy to follow.
"
The two eldest sons died young; Oliver, on the death of his father, succeeded to the estate. He was
representative for Essex in the two parliaments under Cromwell, in 1653 and 1656; and married Frances,
daughter of Sir William Harris, knt. of Margaretting,
by whom he had twenty-one children; of these, Anne was first married to John Laurence, and afterwards to
John Eden, Esq. and Frances was married to John Darcy.
"
John Raymond I and the two eldest sons are not on the Freer Tree but the
names William (d. 1638) and Oliver (d. 1665) appear on the family memorial.
The next Oliver (B2 on the Freer Tree) was the next oldest son after St. Clere. It is interesting the Thomas wright
mentions him first in his narative.
"
Oliver Raymond was a silk-mercer in London; St. Clere, the eldest son, succeeded his father on his death in 1679, and married Anne, daughter of Laurence Wakeham, by whom he had eight children:
William, the second son, was of the six clerks' office, and John, the eldest, who succeeded to the estate, was educated at Emanuel College, Cambridge, and was afterwards of Gray's Inn.
"
William Raymond, was the 3rd son according to Freer (B3)
The John here is John Raymond III. (D1)
"
On his death, in 1690, he left, by his wife Anne, daughter of Sir Robert Burgoyne, of Sutton, in Bedfordshire,
an only son, named John, who, by will, in 1720, left the entailed and other family estates to his legal heirs;
some parts of these were purchased by Samuel Ruggles, Esq. but the Hall remained in possession of, or was purchased by, the family, and, with other estates, belongs to Samuel Millbank Raymond Esq.
"
Thomas Wright's account mentions the marriage of the Raymond and Harris family but there is little context.
The account was written in the 1830's and was possibly influenced by what facts were known at the time
by the Raymond family.
Frances Harris
Oliver married Frances Harris in 1653.
Background to this page
Having seen this page found by those making an Internet search I have decided to add
a bit more context.
There seem to be two Sir William Harris'.
The 21 children
Oliver and Frances had 21 children.
Also shown above is the marriages between Isabella Raymond and John Mayne and
Archibald Cochrane (9th Earl of Dundonald)
