geni.com - A Genealogy Website

geni.com has proven to be quite useful in my research process in finding information on those associated with Belchamp Walter's history. In conjunction with my other research sources and other geneology websites such as wikitree I have found a fair amount of consensus, however, there are many inconsistancies as you would expect bearing in mind the subject!

Some of the research that I have attributed to geni.com seemed to have dissappeared when I go back to check on them. I am beginning to suspect that the "profiles" on geni are somewhat of a "scratch pad" when the participants put notes to themselves to go back and chech on later - this is just what I am doing. In other cases the research notes are just pointers to other documents such as Inquistions and Heralds Visitations.

Jan/Feb 2022 - I have noticed that family crests have started to appear on some of the "profiles". These crests do not always agree with the Visitation records (but this may not mean that they are incorrect).

geni.com is a paid service

It is not surprising that information that first appears as in the "Public Domain" gets moved to the "log-in to see Complete Profile" section of their website.

They say that their "basic" platform is free.

When I look closer at some of my research I see more and more potential inconsistencies. A case in point is the record for Sir William Harris.

My original reference for the name Harris came from a family tree I had found that was published by Alan Freer in his research on the Descendants of William the Conqueror.

Background to this page

Having seen this page found by those making an Internet search I have decided to add a bit more context.

When adding context to some of my pages I found that I was not doing a good job of referencing some of the research that I had found. A lot of this actually comes from geni.com but I suspect that a lot of it was just "bulk" uploaded by the users of the geneology service. Some entries have no reference data others have more than can be digested at one time. Especially as most of it is not formatted.

Having said that there is a shit load of information on the geni.com page for Sir John Botetourt. It would seem that whoever was doing the research here uploaded it to the geni page. Actually some of the source material is formatted quite well but does not render that well when I copy and paste it to one of my pages.

There are a lot of links to The Wayback Machine (archive.com) that do not wrap in responsive "quote boxes".
