The Internet Archive (Wayback Machine)

The Internet Archive (Wayback Machine) is an invaluable source of historical manuscripts.

The use of the Internet Archive requires some explanation.

The Wayback Machine partially solves the problem that a lot of these documents have been sold to collectors around the world.

A nemesis of mine also used it to look at what I had posted in the past and to see if there was anything that I had said about him!

Since I have been researching historical details about the local area I have been finding references that are to Internet Archive pages. This is particularly useful as I was commenting on the fact that many websites have long since shut down and the information once contained therein had been lost.

How I use the Archive

I need to expand (more) on this section.

Pages that are referenced from my History pages often link to the Internet Archive - In the example below I found a reference to Guy de Botetourt.

Royal Ancestry by Douglas Richardson Vol. I. page 451 1.↑ 1.0 1.1 The Deputy Keeper of the Records, Calendar of Inquisitions Micellaneous (Chancery) preserved in the Public Record Office, Vol II, (London: His Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Home Department, 1916), accessed 29 October 2014, https://archive.org/stream/calendarofinqu02grea#page/52/mode/2up pp.53.

The text above, if clicked, will take you to the archive.org webpage.

The problem that I encountered was that the link to archive.org was not really that informative to the visitor and it also did not render that well on a mobile display. (As it was too long to wrap in the " Quote Box").
