Google Analytics 4

Having been much impressed with Google Search Console I thought that I would give Analytics a go again. As I noted before much has happened since I last took a good look. Now we have GA 4 and the tracking code is different to what I had before.

I previously decided to add the tracking code back to pages that I know get visits and then I cen re-valuate Analytics. I need to read the Google Help files as I don't quite understand the desiction between "Universal" and "Global"

May 2023The transistion is proceeding at pace. Having changed mu Universal tracking code ID to a new GA4 code I now find that GA4 is using the old UA-XXXXXX-X

Universal Tracking Code

<script async src="https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js?id=UA-936952-6"></script>
<script>
window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];
function gtag(){dataLayer.push(arguments);}
gtag('js', new Date());

gtag('config', 'UA-936952-6');
</script>

The Analytics ID - gtag

Actually, the code above is NOT the GA4 code but the earlier "Universal" code. However, the tracking code for GA4 is the same but the ID is changed to: G-9PF4G48Z4H. This somewhat confuses me as I have not changed the ID in my tracking code

1st February 2023, far fewer pages seem to turn up in the GA 4 reports. The pages that do, the home page and "Using your reindexing quota", still have the old Universal ID. The Universal Analytics report now has another warning that the playing field will change in July. A global update of the ID would be possible using Notepad++.

3rd February 2023 - All visits now seem to be being missed. Added a new ID to the index and some GA related pages and now they seem to be recorded.

7th February 2023Now the tracking only works with the old tracking code! Goog job I didn't make a global replace as everything would be broken!

I think that I will wait until after July 2023 to see if things settle down or I will be chasing my tail around.

The reason (or one of the reasons) I dropped Google Analytics

When I was looking at cookie policy for website design I decided that I didn't need to use cookies. I now don't care about this and am using Analytics again.
