Menu John de Botetourt 2nd Lord

John de Botetourt 2nd Lord (1318 - 1385)

Sir John de Botetourt, 2nd Lord Botetourt was the son of Thomas and Joan. He was the grandson of Sir John de Botetourt of Mendlesham (chantry at Belchamp Walter).

The Wikitree profile on this Sir John is below.

It this is the first son of Sir John de Botetourt, whose chantry is in Belchamp Walter), then the reference to Halesowen, Shropshire has to be confirmed. The lordship in this case was probably a hereditary one.

Wikitree on Sir John de Botetourt, 2nd Lord

I will have to check the references here.

" Born 1318 in Halesowen, Shropshire Son of Thomas (Botetourt) de Botetourt and Joan (Somery) Botetourt [sibling(s) unknown] Husband of Joyce (Zouche) Botetourt — married before 31 May 1347 [location unknown] Father of John Botetourt, Catherine (Botetourt) Thorpe, Joyce (Botetourt) Peshale and Alice (Botetourt) Kyriel.

and.....from the biography

John Butetourte was born in 1315 as he was 26 on the Christmas before 10 May, 16 Edward III [1342].[1]
John was the son of Joan who was married to Thomas Botetourte.[1] [2]

When John's maternal uncle, John de Someri died, his mother, Joan, and her sister Margaret were his coheirs, then his uncle's wife Lucy died and an Inquisition taken in Salop on 10 May, 16 Edward III [1342], found that the property that Lucy had held in dower in Foxhale, co Salop, came to Joan's son, John Butetourte, aged 26, and Margaret's son, John de Sutton, aged 28.[1]

John was the second 2nd Lord Botetourt, as heir of his grandfather.

His son and grandson both died before him, so he was succeeded by his granddaughter Joyce Burnell, and then by his daughters.

Said to have married Maud de Gray, daughter of the 1st Lord Grey of Rotherfield. But she married his son. See CP Corrections site and SGM thread.

Joyce (Zouche) Botetourt (abt. 1322 - aft. 1375)

The following is from a Wikitree profile: (I will have to follow-up on some the references)

" Joyce was the daughter of William la Zouche,[1] 1st Lord Zouche,[2] and his first wife Alice de Toeni.[3][4] Her parents had lands and interests in several counties and her birth county is not known. Nor is her birth date: it has been estimated as about 1322 on the basis that her husband was said to be 4 at his father's death in 1322, 7 in 1324,[3][4] and 26 at Christmas, 16 Edward III (Christmas, 1342).[5][6]

Joyce married John Botetourt, son and heir of Thomas Botetourt of East Anglia and Joan de Somery, before 31 May 1347.[3][4] They probably married some years earlier: Their son John had a son, also called John, born in about 1362 (he was said to be 7 at his father's death in 1369):[3][4] this suggests a likely birthdate for their son of possibly no later than early 1340s. Their daughter Maud was elected an abbess in 1362: while Maud was then said to be under 20,[7] she was likely to have been in her late teens. Joyce and John Botetourt had the following children: John, who died in his father's lifetime[3][4] Elizabeth, who was contracted to marry Baldwin de Freville but died in childhood[8][9] Alice, who married John Kyriel of Kent[3][4] Joyce, who married Baldwin de Freville, previously contracted in marriage to her deceased sister Elizabeth[8][9] Katherine, who married Thomas de Berkeley and John de Thorpe[3][4] Isabel[3][4]
Maud, who became Abbess of Polesworth Abbey, Warwickshire:[3][4] she was elected Abbess on 8 March 1362, and a papal dispensation had to sought as she was then under 20[7] Agnes, who became a nun at Elstow Abbey, Bedfordshire[3][4] Joyce and her husband belonged to the Trinity Guild of Coventry, Warwickshire, a religious association.[3][4]

Joyce was recorded as living in 49 Edward III (25 January 1375-24 January 1376) when her husband settled his castle at Weoley, Buckinghamshire, along with the manor of Northfield, Buckinghamshire, on himself and his wife Joyce and their heirs.[10] Her death date is unknown.

I am a little suspicious of this Wikitree profile. The references to John and Maud seems to be confused. The "corrections" page on the medievalgenealogy.org.uk webpage seems to be talking about a lot of families that I had not previously come accross.

This is also reflected in the top of the profile, i.e.:

2nd Lord Botetourt and Baron of Weoley

Son of Thomas de Botetourte and Joan de Somery, grandson of John de Botetourt and Maud FitzOtho, and Sir Roger de Somery. Husband of Baroness Botetourt Joyce La Zouche de Mortimer, the daughter of Sir William la Zouche and his first wife Alice de Toeni. They were married on or before 31 May 1347. John and Joyce had a son John who died in 1369 and a daughter Joyce de Botetourt who married Baldwin Freville. Other children are said to have been Alice who married John Kyriel, Katherine who married Maurice de Berkeley and Elizabeth who died young. Joyce had to have died by 1358 as John then married Maud Grey, the daughter of Sir John de Grey of Rotherfield. They married shortly after 28 Nov 1358, and had one son and two daughters; John, Joyce (wife of Sir Hugh Burnell) and another daughter who married Sir John Philip. John succeeded to the title of Baron on the 25th of November, 1324, had livery of his mother's lands on the 16th of July, 1341 and was a member of Parliament from 1342 to 1385.

John's will was probated in 1386 at Lambeth, London, and his barony was held in suspension until his granddaughter, Joyce, took control. She was the daughter of John de Botetourt and Maud de Grey, the daughter of her grandfather's first father-in-law.

Baroness Botetourt Joyce La Zouche de Mortimer

Joyce was the daughter of William La Zouche de Mortimer and Alice de Toeni, and the granddaughter of very strong lines, Robert de Mortimer and Joyce la Zouche and Ralph de Toeni VII. she was a descendant of Alain de Parrhoet, la Zouch, of Breton, France.

Joyce married John de Botetourt, the son of Thomas de Botetourte and Joan de Somery.

For someone with such a rich family history, there is little information. Her parentage was debated for years between Alan and William and her death is uncertain. Joyce lived at Ashby LaZouche Castle in Leicestershire, where the Hastings tower and its ninety eight steps remain, as well as a secret tunnel from the kitchens to the tower.
