The Belchamp Walter Medieval Wall Paintings

In the study of the wall paintings found in the Church of St. Mary the Virgin Belchamp Walter.

In some respects the significance of the wall paintings in the Church those that depict some of the more "superstitious" aspects of why they were painted is more interesting than the Passion Narrative.

Who Painted the Wall Paintings?

It is most likely that they are the works of the monks from Colne Priory. It had previously stated that they were attributed to Mathhew Paris and Virgin and Child compared to that found in St. Mary Great Canfield and that they were likely to be of the same hand.

Aubrey de Vere built Great Canfield castle. A Mott and Bailey castle similar to that at Clare, Suffolk. (actually another de Vere)

The Passion Narrative

Wikipedia says:

Depending on one's views, the "Passion" may include, among other events, Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, his cleansing of the Temple, his anointing, the Last Supper, Jesus' agony in the Garden, his arrest, his Sanhedrin trial, his trial before Pontius Pilate, his crucifixion and his death on Good Friday, his burial, and the resurrection of Jesus. Those parts of the four canonical Gospels that describe these events are known as the "Passion narratives".

I am not sure if the Wikipedia page is correct in the Cleansing of the Temple and they may have meant Peter washing Christs feet as depicted in the Passion Narative in St. Mary's Belchamp Walter.

Sanhedrin Court

What Anne Marshall says about her "Developing Catalogue" on her Painted Church website:

" This site represents the continuing development of what may one day become a comprehensive catalogue. Vast quantities of Medieval Wall Painting have been lost forever, of course, but there is nevertheless more left on English church walls than is generally realised; paintings continue to be uncovered and more still are known to exist under layers of plaster. Some of these will come to light one day; in fact some are already doing so, as at Houghton-on-the-Hill, near Swaffham in Norfolk and Ilketshall St Andrew in Suffolk. "
