Earls of Oxford

The fact that the emcumbant of Castle Hedingham was made an Earl of Oxford, Aubrey de Vere III, and not Earl of Essex is part of the story of the region of Belchamp Walter. The Twelth century was an interesting time in "England" and (I think) just part of the Angevin Empire until the Edwards

The lands of Belchamp Walter were given to Rohse de Vere and Geofrey de Mandeville as part of their marriage settlement. This made Geofrey de Mandeville Aubrey de Vere III's brother-in-law. Geofrey de Mandeville was the 1st Earl of Essex and as Aubrey III was recruited by the Empress Matilda, and probably was "on her side", there was a conflict as Geofrey had been made Earl of Essex by Henry II.

Robert de Vere, 5th Earl of Oxford

Another connection between the de Vere's and Belchamp Walter. (Through the wall painting of the Virgin Mary). The wall painting in St. Mary Great Canfield is very similar to that of the one in St. Mary Belchamp Walter. It is possible that they were both painted by the same artist.

" Robert de Vere died before 7 September 1296. His widow, Alice, died at Canfield, Essex on 7 September 1312.
They were both buried at Earls Colne, Essex. The heart of Robert de Vere was buried separately at the Ipswich Greyfriars, which was the burial place of Margaret Mortimer, wife of the 6th Earl. "

Joan de Vere

There is a monument to Joan de Vere in Chichester Cathedral. Joan was the daughter of Robert and Alice (Alice SAUNFORD).

Joan married William De WARREN (4th Earl. Surrey) Jun 1285.

William and Joan Warren's daughter, Alice, married Edmund Fitzalan, 4th Earl. Arundel, becoming the Countess of Arundel.

There is an Arundel screen in Chichester Cathedral. The guide for the Cathedral makes no mention of de Vere. The copy of the Cathedral guide that I have is dated first published 2007. There is mention of Sir. Richard (1297-1296)????? Need to check ????
