The Felton Family
According to the Sudbury All Saints church website the chantry chapel in the
South aisle was funded by the Felton family.
Sue Scott-Buccleuch of the Richard III Society alerted me to a possible connection between the Felton
Family and Belchamp Walter. This was because of an apparent bequest of funds for a spire on
St. Mary's church, Belchamp Walter.

The corrrespondence from Sue
I am part of a team which is transcribing the fifteenth century wills recorded in the Milles Register.
One of ‘my’ testators is a lady called Maud Felton, widow of John Felton of Sudbury.
She left 20 shillings ‘to the making of the steeple in Water Belcham’.
I think it’s fairly clear that this means present day Belchamp Walter, and the church of
St Mary the Virgin certainly dates from the 14th century. But there is no steeple!
I wonder whether there are any records of a steeple being proposed, but never built?
Any information you can supply would be much appreciated.
Kind regards
Sue Scott-Buccleuch
