Repertorium Ecclesiasticum Parochiale Londinense: Comprising All the County of Essex - Richard Newcourt

Newcourts' Repertorium was found searching for the names of the Vicars of Belchamp Walter. I started the list as part of the page on St. Mary's church. I have also confirmed this list and I have an image of it below.

The image below is taken from the EASH Transactions Vol. VI - 1898. The PDF is not easy to copy and paste text. I do have a copy of the original Repertorium

Newcourt

The entry in Newcourt's shown above reports an interesting account of what was happening in Belchamp Walter in the reign of Elizabeth I. This is not recorded in any of the information that I have seen to date.

Edward de Vere

Edward de Vere - 17th Earl of Oxford (1562–1604), who was re-granted the Advowson from the Crown, and whose daughter Anne married Lord Burghley, was thinking about "folding the Advowson away". The reasons for this are not totally clear due to the language used. Tying this to the "revenge" and the businesses of Mary Queen of Scots, is echoed in the account on my page on Castle Hedingham.

The "businesses" of Mary Queen of Scots was a plot assassination of Queen ELizabeth (alleged)

Newcourt wrote his Repertorium in 1700 this was 6 years after Edward de Vere's death, so he was prpbably recounting facts of the day rather than quoting another historian.

What is Newcourts' Repertorium?

Newcourts' Repertorium is a Ecclesiastical parocial history of the diocese of London. Second volume MDCC (1700).

Newcourt reproduced effigies of the clergy that had been found memorialised in tombs and brasses. He is quoted by the EASH article about the incised slabs.

The Botetourt Chantry

The entry for the vicarage of Belchamp Walter makes no mention of Sir John de Botetourt. However the entry for Belchamp Otes (Otten) does, but there seems to be a confusion of the two Belchamps and Newcourt suggests that the naming of Belchamp Walter is more likely to be Belchamp William or William Simon after the heirs of William de Beauchamp.

The Naming of Belchamp Walter

Newcourt also gives a little more insight here. Instead of a somewhat random reference as found in P.H.Reaney's Placenames of Essex. Actually, I think that Reaney was quoting Morant and this can be seen on my page on The Belchamps.

The Vicars of St. Mary's

This is the list that comes from Newcourt. It pretty much agrees with that found on the information sheet for the church.

Newcourt_vicars

The list also contains the Archbishops that the vicars contemporary. The Sudbury is none other than Simon of Sudbury (Peasant's Revolt).

  • Simon of Sudbury -
  • Robert Braybroke - Robert Braybrooke (1336/7-1404) was a medieval cleric and King's Secretary. He was Dean of Salisbury and Bishop of London.
  • R.C.Arundel - Thomas Arundel - 1396-1414
  • John Kemp
  • Cuthbert Tunstall
  • Grindall
  • Henry Compton

The Village Name - Belchamp William and Belchamp Simon

The image above mentions Sir John de Botetourt (after 44 Henry III - 28 October 1259–27 October 1260, Robert Swynbourne (1391-1431) and then John Helion (1437-1448) having the advowsen of the manor.

Richard Newcourt - Historian

In an earlier version of this page I mistakenly confused the two Richard Newcourts. The Newcourt here is the historian and not the friend of Dugdale, who was a historian and the Richard Newcourt he knew illustrated some of Dugdale's books.

Newcourt_vicars

Dugdale and Newcourt the cartographer were from a generation earlier. The history provided by the Richard Newcourt on this page reveals some inportant connections for the history of Belchamp Walter. Newcourt reports the structure of the clergy at Belchamp Walter and the advowsen situation for the 14th and 15th centuries.

Taking Newcourt's entries for the Belchamps it gives an insight for the Botetourt, Helion and the Swynbourne Years. It also fills the gap in the chronology from Swynbourne to the Wentworth Years
