DIY - The Do It Yourself Approach
While this at first seems to be a daunting task it is not.
On my "Concept" pages I describe how a simple website can be generated and administered. The "DIY" approach, while not for everyone, is relatively straight forward and does not involve anything that most computer users are not already well accustomed. We all use email and many who run or work for organisations know how to use tools such as Microsoft Word and Excel. The concepts I describe here are no more complex. There is a general "fear of coding" that many will have as it is promoted heavily by those that would like to sell you a solution and "do it for you"!
The "Fear of Coding"
I have a page dedicated to this topic. My goal here is to show that these fears are unfounded and you only need to be able to perform a few simple operations to change a simple website to perform the way that you desire.
The basic steps (tasks)
Here are the steps that I use to create content for this website. I will have a page on each step. While this seems like over-kill it serves to comfirm my design planning.
- New page creation
- Adding menu items
- Adding links to documents - resources
- Checking design in local browser
- Uploading to Webserver.
- Testing on other devices
The Templates
In keeping with other development techniques I use a set of templates that form the basis of new pages.
Additional Steps
These maybe part of the initial setup of your website and only need to be performed once.
- Registration of Domain Name and Hosting
- Email configuration - communication methods:
- Form Management - possibly a Contact form.
