Bury St Edmunds
Bury St. Edmunds was used as a filmig location for the TV series Lovejoy. The Angel Hotel opposite the Abbey Gardens was seen in episode 3 series 1.
Bury St. Edmunds is 10 miles North of Belchamp Walter. In historical terms it is important as it was the location of the Abbey the existed pre Conquest whos lands were subject to the wills of William I.
Abbot Balwin was King Edward the Confessor's doctor and promoted the cult of Edmund the Martyr (Hence the name of the town).
A previous version of this page referred Bishop Baldwin, Archbishop of Canterbury between 1185 and 1190. This was in error.
Wikipedia says:
After the Norman Conquest in 1066, Baldwin received a confirmation of the abbey's title to all their lands;[8] however the new king, William the Conqueror, ordered Baldwin to surrender to him any lands held by men who had fought against him and who had died in that resistance.[9] Baldwin continued to serve as a royal doctor to William. He also defended East Anglia against Danish incursions after the Conquest, as well as against general disorder there from after-effects of the Conquest.Edmund the Martyr is depicted in the medieval wall paintings in St. Mary's Belchamp Walter.
