Simon de Montfort

Simon de Montfort was a Anglo/Norman knight that opposed the rule of Henry III. He fought in the Battle of Evesham (1265) alongside John de Beauchamp. The de Beauchamp connection is the relevance to the history of Belchamp Walter.

The 13th Century and what was happening in the village of Belchamp Walter is still being un-picked. The account of Thomas Wright in his History of Essex is not clear on the sequence of events and what families were directly relevant to the region. Undoubtedly there is recorded marriage of Botetourt to a de Beauchamp and it is likely that there is a further connection to the de Vere family
