Facebook Hacking

I was recently asked: "Why would anyone want to hack a Facebook account?". This is good question and should accompany the general question why anyone would want to hack any website?

Looking in my server logs I see daily attempts to gain my Wordpress credentials. The stupid thing is this website does not run Wordpress!

It is because of the vulnerabilities of large plaforms such as Wordpress (and Facebook) that I don't use them. The reasons for not using Facebook are more complex however.

I would say that the tempusfugit.me.uk server gets 2 or 3 of these "probes" every day. Unlike Facebook, once a Wordpress account has been conpromised the hacker can then run riot with the PHP code. The wp-login.php file is the user login prorgam and if found the hacker would probably try to "brute-force" User ID and passwords attacks on your site.

However, the fact thet a file with the name wp-login was found tells the hacker that you are indeed running Wordpress. Once established, the hacker may probe deeper to find configuration files (tables in mySQL) that DO contain your passwords etc.
