Academia.edu

I have an account on Academia.edu in my real name. I receive daily updates with articles that they think I may be interested.

I must have come across Academia when making a search.

I also have to state that I have found many useful leads from the articles posted on Academia. I am a little bemused by the fact that I have been mentioned by other "academics" in their work. This cannot be the case I don't publish using my real name.

Richard Price

The Wikipedia page on Richard Price:

Richard Price is a British entrepreneur and the founder of Academia.edu, a for-profit academic social network and open-access publishing website.

The "for-profit academic social network" sort-of flys in the face of my views on Social Media in general.

I am not sure if I had to register with Academia using my real name. I could have decided that it would be a good test to see if I would be "mentioned" under my real name. I doubt this as it would have been a "chicken and egg" situation as I wouldn't have known about being mentioned until after signing up for updates.
