Zucehero or Zucchero
When researching the history of Belchamp Walter I tried to find information online for the names that I saw mentioned in other documents and observations of names on monuments in St. Mary's Church.
The name of Frances Astley was deduced from the connection to Oliver Raymond who married the daughter
of Sir William Harris and Frances Astley.
This Frances Harris (Frances Raymond), same name as her mother, had 21 children presumably while she
lived at Belchamp Hall.
Frances Astley
Lady Harris was the wife of Sir William Harris
The Alan Freer family tree of descendants of William I shows the connection between the Raymond family and the Harris family. It does not show any direct link the the Smythies Family so it is a bit of a mystery why the paintings and the names of the Harris' appear in The Records of the Smythies Family.
Federico Zuccari
Making an Internet search for Zucchero or Zucehero - 1596 finds the artist Federico Zuccari.
Federico Zuccari was contemporary with Sir William Harris and Lady Harris.
The Wikipedia page decribes Federico Zuccari as a "Mannerist" painter. This does not seem to jive with the paintings in Belchamp Hall and the artist could be a different person.
While the current owner of the portraits of Lord and Lady Harris are not aware of the painter of the portraits and the citation that they are by Zucchero in the Records of the Smythies Family, there is a portrait of Sir John Hawkins by a Federico Zuccari, 1591, in the book The Spanish Armada by Colin Martin and Geoffrey Parker. The style is similar.
Sir John Hawkins was the captain of the Victory who chased the Spanish Armada from the English Channel around the North of Scotland in 1588.
