Protected Directories
Pages and data can be "hidden" on your website's server so that they are only accessible will a user name and password. There are a couple of ways that you can do this and your web hosting service will probably provide a means for you to do this.
For example, you may want to provide your Parish Councilors with a list of information that is not available to the general visitor.
This is a feature of HostingUK (and other hosting services)
It is easy to configure and the passwords and user names are assigned by the Parish Clerk or Webmaster.

I used to administer the access to protected directories directly on my server by editing the .htaccess file. Before that I had a Perl script that updated the file interactively.
There should be no need to do this as your hosting service will provide this function.
