Otes, Oates or Otho
The family name Otho is an ancient dynasty that is important to the region of North Essex and the history of the country in general.
In compiling my history of Belchamp Walter and surrounding villages it would seem that there is some confusion with the name Oates.
The Oates name is associated with the village of Gestingthorpe as there are memorials to the explorer Titas Oates in the Church.
The Oates Family lived in the hall opposite (commonly known as Gestingthorpe Hall but was originally called Nether Hall).
The ancient family of Otho (Otto) as recorded as holding the manor in the 13th and 14th centuries. There is a confusion between the similar sounding names.

The entries appearing on BHO, the ones that I have looked at, seem to be from 1900 - 1910.
