A rant
This page was started as I had run out of space on my page on thepeerage.com on which I had found some relevant historical information. However, I had also found information of someone that I know personally and whose mother was a life peer.
Not only does this give her the option of using the title "Honourable" on her cheques. In addition, the family members related to the life peer are also listed on thepeerage.com. While this is probably how the system was designed, I do not think that it is right.
Life Peer
The legitimate children of a life peer appointed under the Life Peerages Act 1958 are entitled to style themselves with the prefix "The Honourable", although they cannot inherit the peerage.
It is not clear from the Wikipedia page whether the adopted children of a mother of a life peer or even the husband of the daughter of a life peer are allowed to use the title "The Honourable". Never-the-less, these names appear on thepeerage.com's website.
