The Battle of Hastings

Along with the Bayeux Tapestry there are many accounts of what actually happened and why.

Contrary to popular belief the battle was not just the story of the invasion of England by WIlliam the Conqueror and the death of Harold but the story leading up to the battle.

One of the best accounts that I have read regarding the build-up to the Battle of 1066 is David Micheal's Unruly.

Companions of William

There seems to be a competition to have a connection to an individual that accompanied William the Conqueror in his invasion of England in 1066. Whether this is due to the notion that if your family was associated with the Norman invasion force you are one of the "elite".

There are many Anglo-Norman families that are associated with Normandy in the 11th and 12th centuries, some of which feature in English history. A family to which this applies is the family of de Vere.

Wadad

Wadard was an 11th-century Norman nobleman who is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and is depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry.

Wadard was a noble who travelled to England in 1066 with Duke William of Normandy. He is depicted and named in the Bayeux Tapestry on a foraging expedition, and may have been in the logistics section of William's army. His portrait suggests that he held a senior rank.[1]

By the time of the Domesday Book, Wadard is recorded as a tenant of Odo, bishop of Bayeux, holding estates amounting to about 1,260 acres in Kent and elsewhere, and providing him with an income of around £127.[2] His holdings included Farningham,[3] Combe, and six houses in Dover, in Kent; Cassington,[4] Thrupp,[5] and Little Tew in Oxfordshire,[6] Thames Ditton in Surrey; and Glentham in Lincolnshire.
