Orderic Vitalis - Historia Ecclesiastica

Orderic Vitalis and Historia Ecclesiastica came to my attention while researchig the history of Belchamp Walter, the surrounding area and the country in general.

In contrast to say Geofrey of Monmouth, Orderic is regarded as a "reliable" source.

Wikipedia says:

" Orderic Vitalis (Latin: Ordericus Vitalis; 16 February 1075 – c.1142) was an English chronicler and Benedictine monk who wrote one of the great contemporary chronicles of 11th and 12th-century Normandy and Anglo-Norman England.
Modern historians view him as a reliable source "

The Historia Ecclesiastica

The Historia Ecclesiastica - "English social history of the Middle Ages" has three sections.

  1. The history of Christanity from the start of the first millenium. From 855 a catalogue of the popes.
  2. Norman affairs - these include the Conquest and the lost portion of William of Poitiers' Gesta Guillelmi.
  3. Ecclesiastical affairs - The crusades and the fate of William I's direct descenants ending in the defeat and capture of Stephen in Lincoln in 1141.

Henry I's New Men

Henry bestowed honours on those that served him well, Wikipedia says:

" The chronicler Orderic Vitalis in his Historia Ecclesiastica said that Henry had "enobled others of base stock who had served him well, raised them, so to say, from the dust, and heaping all kinds of favours on them, stationed them above earls and famous constables."[2]
Orderic went on to mention a number of men that he considered "new men".[1] "

Such "New Men" include a Walter de Beauchamp.

Background to this page

Having seen some of my history pages being found by those making an Internet search I have decided to add a bit more context on how the pages came about.
