The use of Regnal Years

In many of the analyses of IPMs and other ancient documents Regnal dates are used. This can be a little confusing and the dates that we really accept are often off by a year.

In Great Britain the dates of reigns of monarchs can be problematic. For example, 18 Edward II could be either 1320 or 1321 depending on the month the event refers.

The Manor of Wottone

This is another example of where I reference a regnal date with respect to John Botetourt and the Gascony connection.

The Inquistion in the Wottone quote is from 23 Edward I, which could be 1294 or 1295.

What Sir John was doing for Edward I at this time is not clear. The Scottish conquest is generally recorded as 1296 and John was constable of St Briavels.
