Ownership of Land
The time period between 1600 and 1680 - the English Civil War and the Restoration, saw many changed in ownership of land in Belchamp Walter.
Post Tudor (starting in 1603) and post the Wentworth Aquisition in 1539. The manor was sold to John Raymond, first of Belchamp Walter) in 1611. This was prior to the Tenures Abolition act of 1660, under Charles II, so one can assume that tenure was still a question of more than who had the money to make the purchase.
The Civil War - 1642-1651
Belchamp Walter featured in the activities of Oliver Cromwell as Oliver Raymond served on two of his Protectorate parliaments. In addition there are also evidence that other families in the area were sympathetic to the Repulican cause.
