St. Mary the Virgin

The wall painting of Mary the mother of Jesus was the first medieval wall painting to be uncovered at Belchamp Walter.

This painting's discovery led to an investigation into whether there were other paintings and the discovery of the wall paintings that you can see above the chantry chapel arch. These paintings, as were the others in the church, whitewahed over as a consequence the reformation.

The discovery of the medieval paintings was made in the 1960's and the renovation performed in 1964 by Professor Eve Baker, a renown conservator along with her partner Dr. Robert Baker. The restoration work was performed by Eve Baker's team and funded by the Pilgrim Trust.
