Flickr as a Historical Reference

Many of the topics I have included on my pages have references to Flickr postings. While these postings often have interesting information attached to the photographs the platform is not a good way of presenting factual information.

There are a number of individuals and organisations that I have identified that have used or continue to use Flickr as a means to present their information. These include:

  • Simon Knott - he uses Flickr to host a large number of his excellent photographs of East Anglian churches. While there is nothing intrinsically wrong with this, I feel that it is mainly due to that his main websites cannot support the PDF multimedia plugin that he started out with.
  • JMC4 - another Church Crawler with excellent photos. JMC4 uses Flickr exclusively to describe her photographs as she doesn't have a dedicated website. Again, this is perfectly okay as it gets her message out.
  • shotley.onesuffolk.net - I found this when I was looking for information on Ewarton Hall. Again, great photos but the reference back to a shotley.onesuffolk.net page is no longer on the shotley.onesuffolk.net website.

Sponsored Photos

When a Flicker user obtains sponsorship for their photographs the comments (notes) seem to get bumped to a very small scrollbax. This seems to be the case for the information I found on Erwarton Hall as it was not easy to find the URL to shotley.onesuffolk.net.

This could be due to that Flickr are discouraging it use for unpaid business use.
