Oliver Cromwell

Belchamp Walter's history in the 17th Century must have taken its course due to the support or opposition to those involved with the English Civil War.

The period of history leading to the English Civil war, the late 16th and early 17th centuries - 1590's to the 1640's, saw the assession of James I (James VII Scotland), the attempt on his life in the Gunpowder Plot (1605) and the assession of Charles I (1625), saw much unrest in England's Catholics and Puritans.

The community of of Belchamp Walter saw the arrival of the current encumbents of the Belchamp Hall Estate in 1611. The son of the "purchaser" Oliver Raymond served in two of Cromwell's Protectrate Parliaments .

Cromwell goes to war.

A Civil War broke out in England in August 1642.

On one side stood King Charles I, and those who supported his rule. On the other, the men who had come to see him as a tyrant. Those who took arms against the king included some of the aristocracy as well as small landholders and businessmen from the richest parts of the country, London, the ports, and the cloth and clothing areas of East Anglia, Yorkshire, Lancashire and the southwest. Men like Oliver Cromwell.

The clothing areas of East Anglia would include Belchamp Walter.
