Carbon Calculator
Having listened to a BBC World Service program about an organisation that had developed a Carbon Shopping App I was interested to see what common consumables have a contribution to CO2 production.
Making an Internet search for such a calculator mainly returns pages from those that offer to caluculate your total personal carbon footprint, car and truck manufacturers and operators, those that are offering to sell you carbon credits. A simple calculator does not seem to be available on the Internet. If you are reading this and know of such a calculator I will happily post a link to it.
For example, if you want to know how much CO2 is produced in the refining of 1 litre of petrol then you have to wade through the miriad of sites telling you that burning a litre of petrol produces over 2.4Kg of CO2 to discover that the true carbon impact of 1 litre is 3.14Kg of CO2 when you take into account the refining.
I would also add that there is not mention of how much CO2 is produced for the crude oil to develop of time and the cost of digging it out of the ground. The extra 740g of CO2 was just that from refining.
When it comes to electric vehiles there is often no mention of how much CO2 is produced in the generation of the charging of such or the total cost of the vehiles production.
