The Battles of Lincoln
The two Battles of Lincoln are important events in the understanding of the early Medieval period of the 12th and 13th centuries.
- First - 1141 - Stephen vs. Matilda (Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester, Earl Ranulf of Chester) - Stephen was defeated
- Second - 1217 - The French vs. the English (Henry III - William Marshal)
First battle of Lincoln - 1141
The first battle of Lincoln was fought between King Stephen and supporters of the Empress Matilda led by Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester.
Rupert Matthews book "The Battle of Lincoln 1141" describes the combatants and the battle very well.
Stephen's army consisted of:
- King Stephen
- William of Ypres
- William of Aumale - Earl of York - William le Gros, William le Gras, William d'Aumale, William Crassus (died 20 August 1179)
- Simon of Senlis, Earl of Huntingdon-Northampton
- Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Hertford
- Earl Alan of Richmond
- Hugh Bigod, Earl of Norfolk
Matilda's army (Robert's army):
- Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester - there is a de Clare connection here???? (need to expand)
- Earl Ranulf of Chester - the incumbant of Lincoln Castle
- William of Roumare, Bolinbrooke
- Many Welshmen (I need to expand on this)

Second battle of Lincoln - 1217
The Second battle of Lincoln was fought between followers of the future Louis VIII of France and King Henry III.
Prince Louis' troops were led by William Marshal.
