The first battle of Lincoln was fought between King Stephen and supporters of the Empress Matilda led by Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester.

Rupert Matthews book "The Battle of Lincoln 1141" describes the combatants and the battle very well.

Stephen's army consisted of:

  • King Stephen
  • William of Ypres
  • William of Aumale - Earl of York - William le Gros, William le Gras, William d'Aumale, William Crassus (died 20 August 1179)
  • Simon of Senlis, Earl of Huntingdon-Northampton
  • Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Hertford
  • Earl Alan of Richmond
  • Hugh Bigod, Earl of Norfolk

Matilda's army (Robert's army):

  • Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester - there is a de Clare connection here???? (need to expand)
  • Earl Ranulf of Chester - the incumbant of Lincoln Castle
  • William of Roumare, Bolinbrooke
  • Many Welshmen (I need to expand on this)

Robert FitzRoy, 1st Earl of Gloucester

Second battle of Lincoln - 1217

The Second battle of Lincoln was fought between followers of the future Louis VIII of France and King Henry III.

Prince Louis' troops were led by William Marshal.

from Wikipedia......

First Battle of Lincoln- 2 February 1141

" The Battle of Lincoln, or the First Battle of Lincoln, occurred on 2 February 1141 in Lincoln, England between King Stephen of England and forces loyal to Empress Matilda. Stephen was captured during the battle, imprisoned, and effectively deposed while Matilda ruled for a short time.

Second Battle of Lincoln - 20 May 1217

" The Second Battle of Lincoln occurred at Lincoln Castle on Saturday 20 May 1217, during the First Barons' War, between the forces of the future Louis VIII of France and those of King Henry III of England.

Louis's forces were attacked by a relief force under the command of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke.
Thomas, Count of Perche, commanding the French troops, was killed and Louis was expelled from his base in the southeast of England. The looting that took place afterwards is known as the "Lincoln Fair".

The citizens of Lincoln were loyal to Louis so Henry's forces sacked the city.

Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester

again, from the Wiipedia page..........

" Robert FitzRoy, 1st Earl of Gloucester (c. 1090 – 31 October 1147[2]) (alias Robert Rufus, Robert de Caen (Latinised to Robertus de Cadomo[3]), Robert Consul[4][5]) was an illegitimate son of King Henry I of England. He was the half-brother of the Empress Matilda, and her chief military supporter during the civil war known as the Anarchy, in which she vied with Stephen of Blois for the throne of England.
