ASUS Vivobook 16 OLED (M1605)
A few notes on the aquisition 26 Oct 2024
It is surprising that one forgets that the setup of a new computer is often a pain! In this case I wanted just to do a setup as a new computer. It seems that there have been many changes where there are many options to "restore" your new computer on your new hardware. This presumes that you have backed-up your computer using the tools that Microsoft (and others) have made available.
The Microsoft Account
I had forgotten about this! I had made some notes when I setup my Medion computer - things don't seem to have changed a whole lot.
However, I did use my old Microsoft Account although I have no interest in using it. I did have to use the Single Use Code method. I did find out that I had used Andy N as my ID for the account (the Hotmail email).
Also, logging into Google restored my browsing history and passwords so I was able to get into my hosting service. I did have to generate a new FTP account as I could not remember what login I was using. HostingUK.net know about this and have helped me in the past.
Default Search
As I speculated before the default search is now Bing (on a new computer).
It took me a couple of days to realise this! I hazard a guess that most users would not even realise this and will bemaking Bing searches aven if they are "Google people".
If you want to use Google, Yahoo or even DuckDuckGo, you will have to do this in settings.
At first I was a little put out as I hadn't noticed. However, this is a confirmation of what I had worked out before In that the use of Google tools does not preclude the use of other monitoring tools and server logs.
Subscriptions
I can understand why there is a desire of hardware and software vendors to try and get customers to take out subscriptions to services. Free trials are all very well, but the fact that the trials are about to expire and that is a concern for you is not really a concern if you don't need the service.
Backup and virus protection are cases in point. Seeing as I don't want a backup of the files on my computer apart from the files that I have for my website (which I backup as a matter of course) I don't see the need to make a backup of files that I have downloaded in the past and I know that I don't need to have a permenant copy. Virus protection is also something that can be "over-played". While it is very important that you are protected from malicious links I do still believe that it is still a matter of common sense.
