Microsoft Single Use Code

What do you do if you recieve an email form Microsoft account team giving you a single user code to use with your Microsoft account.

You may think that the screenshot of an email that I received is a revelation of a code to access my Microsoft Account, is is not! The email address is NOT a Microsoft Account and just a "recovery" email address.

This is triggered by a hacker attempting to gain access to your Microsoft account as they have found the email address in a list somwhere. This does not mean that you are at risk or in fact that you have been hacked. It is just that you email address has been harvested and has been deemed to be worthy of being compromised. In fact, it could be seen as a complement!

The code will only work with my Microsoft Account, and to be honest I am not sure what the User ID for it is!

What should you do about this

Simply ignore it!

If you search for solutions you will find all sorts of advice, including nonsense from Microsoft forums, there is no point in changing your password as it obviously is strong enough to get someone to try and get access to it.

When I wrote this page I see that the reply on the Microsoft Answers forum was updated on the same day, so this is a current problem August 10, 2023.

I do have a Microsoft account but I do not use it. Microsoft constantly try to get me to complete the setup of my computer as they know that I have not signed up for all their "linkages" with my new computer (now not new).

This costs whoever is sending these messages

Well, if the message was a text message (SMS/WhatsApp/Etc) then it would, an email is just spam.
