Wentworth in America

In my reasearch of the history of Belchamp Walter the significance of the Wentworth family is key to the period of time before the estate "came" to the Raymond family.

John Raymond "purchased" the estate from Wentworth in 1611. I say "purchased" as I think that the concept of "Real Estate", and I am purposely using the North American term here, had yet to be established. The "ownership" of land and estates was still a question of who you knew and who you married plus the intervention of Inquisitions that determined who "held" what.

The Wentworth family were an "ancient" family in the North Essex and Sufolk region and sometime in the early 17th Century I believe that a Wentworth emigrated to the New World. The 15th and 16th Centuries saw the Wentworths in Gosfield, Nettlestead, Wethersfield and Cobham.

Inquisitions

One of the things that does not apply to the period of time from the 17th Century is that of land claims on the basis of an Inquistion due to the lack of a male heir. In fact this had long been the case.

"The Wentworth genealogy: English and American" - was found in a reference found on geni.com (I think). Or at least a mention of it. I subsequently found a scan of the document on archive.org.

This was in addition to the article on EASH
