thegenealogist.co.uk

thegenealogist.co.uk is a busines retailing public domain information from UK Censuses and other sources.

Looking back on my critisism page of genealogical websites in general I am surprised that I hadn't featured thegenealogist.co.uk before. They seem to be a pretty slick operation and an indication that there is money to be made in getting people to research their past.

The author of tempusfugit.me.uk is increasingly frustrated by so-called genealogical websites. Often the information that is claimed to be held by them is purely derivative from other sources. If you are not in a position to do the research for yourself then I can see some value in them. Otherwise you are probably better off going to the sources directly. Sites such as TheGenealogist obfuscate these sources as they are primarily in the business of selling it to you.

An example would be the Belchamp Walter census of 1891, I have studied this in detail and research many of the connections, you will not find this in the listing taken directly from the census.

What the Wikipedia page says:

This is an example of a Wikipedia page that was probably penned by the owner of TheGenealogist.co.uk/gsj.ltd/genealogysupplies.com. There is nothing wrong with this as Wikipedia is a business as well"

" TheGenealogist is a family history website that provides subscriptions for researchers to help search genealogy records in the United Kingdom. The site is run by Genealogy Supplies (Jersey) Ltd which is part of the S&N Group. Among its accomplishments, the company has completely transcribed the England and Wales censuses from 1841 to 1911 inclusive. The site has been identified as among "the most prominent" subscription-based genealogy websites.[1] "

The first reference link[1} is to an advertising link - NOT the article or book "Women, Work and the Victorian Periodical". It also mentions the National Archive and other Genealogy websites.

Jersey is a tax haven

Why would this be the location for a company that offers information on UK history? There is nothing wrong with this and there are many fine sources of genealogical data from American, Australian and other countries.

GenFair - the “One-Stop Shop” for Family and Local Historians

This is yet another company run by the S&N Group. They may have a UK address but they are still part of the Jersey company.

The GenFair Website appears to offer a wide range of "product" but if you drill-down for a specific item of information you will find that you can be disappointed that it is not there.
