Search Console reports London

Depending on what device I am using the City reported by Google Analytics is either London or "not set".

As I have been monitoring pages that are popular this has seemed to have happened in July 2022. The fact that my page on Munt Cottage recieved an "organic" visit from "London" gave me cause for thought as I had not been there myself.

On further investigation it appears that many visits and searches that appear to be made from London are from mobile networks and also County Broadband. Seeing a visit from London in a Google Analytics or Search Console report is often less than helpful.

In addition, the Google Anayltics reports when pages are accessed on different devices the location information is often different. For example, a page accessed on a desktop computer shows a location "London" the same page accessed on an iPad often shows a location elsewhere in the UK. This is from the same IP address, i.e. our home location. This leads me to think that there is a lot that is not very precise when it comes to IP Location.

A Pleasant Change

Before I had made some changes on the page for Munt Cottage there were visits possibly looking for anythiing that I have said about a certain thatcher.

Location information

The fact that visits are recorded as being from London is not surprising as all accesses from our local Internet provider seem to be routed from the Internat back-bone based from a London server.

Accesses from an Apply device using the Safari browser often report differently as they are using a Private Relay
