Belchamp Walter VH and GDPR
The GDPR statement that was published on the Belchamp Walter Village Hall website was incorrect on a number of points.
In general the assumption seemed to be that the website was in some way similar to that of a Social Media site such as Facebook. Even in it first incarnation it differed from this model on the following counts:
- You could not "Join" the website as a member
- While there was a Contact form implemented on the website, the personal data was stored on the Wordpress server and Wordpress would have been the determining body regarding data protection.
- The use of Cookies was not correct on a number of points:
- The site did not use Google Analytics
- There was no concept of member data
- The lifetime of these supposed cookies was stated a one year - I don't know where this came from
- There was no opt-out option for the storage of your name, email and other information in the basic Wordpress form.
- You could not comment on pages on the website, so cookies and GDPR were irrelevant in this case.
- Wordpress does not give its users access to server logs.
- There are no "consent" forms
- There was no means for users to have an Account on the website.
- The computer used to administer the website was NOT password protected (Well mine isn't) and the data is not stored on that computer when it is entered into Wordpress.
This is not a diatribe
There was no initial direct intention to criticise the person who wrote original draft of the GDPR policy. As it turned out it did become a critism and I think that it was justified.
When the GDPR policy was posted on the Village Hall website, not by me, it was not relevant to the site as it was at the time. This I made known and I was greeted with a complete disengagement on my concerns. Never-the-less I left the policy on the Wordpress website. I did re-write the policy for my re-write of the website, bvvk.uk. The BWVH.uk website was abandoned due to the same lack of feedback on it.
