Index Coverage Report

Index Coverage Report

I must admit that I still don't quite understand the Index Coverage Report in Google Search Console.

When I run the report (link on this page) I see that there are a number of my pages that have been crawled but not indexed as Google has determined its own canonical URL for the page. This could be due to duplicate content but in the cases that I have investigated it would not appear that this is the case.

Alternate page with proper canonical tag

This page is marked as an alternate of another page (that is, an AMP page with a desktop canonical, or a mobile version of a desktop canonical, or the desktop version of a mobile canonical). This page correctly points to the canonical page, which is indexed, so there is nothing you need to do. Alternate language pages are not detected by Search Console.

An example of this is https://tempusfugit.me.uk/post_surgery_3.html. This is a rewrite of an earlier page in an old format. It is difficult to know if this was deemed to be "duplicate content". The old page was removed from the server and a request to remove the old page from the index and a new index request made for the new page.

Duplicate Content

When updating pages from an old layout it is easy to do. As I have updated so many pages it is almost impossible to keep track.
