In most cases the choice of a domain name is not that important. You may want to have a domain that reflects your branding but I think that this is a secondary consideration. Never-the-less, this is not the popularly held opinion.

Do the WhoIs searches affect whether a domain is kept on suspension?

Performing a WHOIS search on the GoDaddy website is probably unwise as they maybe tracking the visits to see if there is anyone interested in a domain that they have in suspension.

Registering a domain through Wordpress

If you allow the domain to expire you may run into problems getting it back.

In the case that I am looking at the domain was registered for the "Free Year" that Wordpress offer. The official registrar was TSOHost. TSOHost were aquired by GoDaddy in 2023 and the domain is, at the time of writing, in the GoDaddy domainhasexpired namespace. The statuses of the domain are:

serverHold
pendingDelete
redemptionPeriod
clientDeleteProhibited

The pendingDelete is set due to the rules setout by ICANN and coud mean that it will be "released" back into the pool for re-registering by another party. Due to ICANN's new guidelines with respect to Domain Name Abuse every effort seems to be made to allow the original registrant recover the registration.

This status code may be mixed with redemptionPeriod or pendingRestore. In such case, depending on the status (i.e. redemptionPeriod or pendingRestore) set in the domain name, the corresponding description presented above applies. If this status is not combined with the redemptionPeriod or pendingRestore status, the pendingDelete status code indicates that your domain has been in redemptionPeriod status for 30 days and you have not restored it within that 30-day period. Your domain will remain in this status for several days, after which time your domain will be purged and dropped from the registry database.

Once deletion occurs, the domain is available for re-registration in accordance with the registry's policies.

serverHold This status code is set by your domain's Registry Operator. Your domain is not activated in the DNS.
